WAKSA Freestyle Clinic Wrap-up

WAKSA’s first freestyle clinic on Sunday shaped out to be a fun filled event, attracting riders with differing kiting abilities.

With the help of the coaches, riders left the clinic with smiles on their faces and new tricks in the bag. One member learnt a back roll within half hour and others landed their first railey (and more), after coming from no previous ‘unhooking’ experience. One of the more experienced riders was going for the harder tricks, such as the backmobe, which was impressing to see.

After the clinic, it was then the coaches’ turn to take centre stage as they entertained the crowd with their speccy tricks in perfect flat water conditions.

Thank you to all the coaches (Chrissy Gaudieri, Mark Richardson, Daniel Anderson & Simon Wichermann) for dedicating their time to the clinic. And thanks to the riders for making it down

We are ON again for the comp this Sunday.

The swell forecast is good with winds looking OK from 1 or 2 . We will assess the conditions on Sunday morning for the final call on format and how we make our way through the remaining rounds.

Meet at Brighton beach, most likely 200 m south of the main ramp, for an 11 am briefing and the comp will start ASAP after that.

It's important you make the briefing for safety reasons and so you understand the comp format and run sheet - it will give you the best chance of enjoying the day.

All help will be gratefully appreciated with setup as usual from 10am.

Thanks to our sponsor Kite Addiction

Preliminary notice – Sunday start or standby

Today’s forecast for this weekend looks average, with a southerly 13 to 18 knots starting Sunday afternoon with around a 1m swell.

So the event might start Sunday afternoon 16th November, depending on the long range forecast for the next weekend. We will make a final call based on the forecast on Friday.

If the event goes ahead, the safety & competitor briefing and outline of the day's event will be at Brighton Beach on Sunday morning at 11.00am with the first heats commencing immediately after that. We expect to wrap up the competition by about 6pm.

There has been a few questions arround jacket types of PFD 1, 2, 3 and 50S etc.

This is best explained using the following link from transport as to what they are.

http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/marine/MAC_B_Safety_Equipment_Lifejackets.pdf

Keep in mind the previous post has been updated with ranges from shore and PFD types, in summary those venturing further than 400m from shore will probably use PFD type 3.

The first point I would like to make is WAKSA did not instigate or drive these changes, they have occurred in response to an overall marine safety initiative for all water users.  WAKSA was consulted in regard to the changes and we did provide feedback on what would work for kite surfers.

Unfortunately the media release has not gone to plan, however the short version is as follows.

  • There will be an education campaign in 2014/15,
  • with cautions for non-compliance in 2015/16
  • infringements issued in 2016/17.
  • WAKSA will be consulted in all changes going forward
  • These changes were going to happen anyway
  • The average kite surfer will not be affected.
